Statistical Areas / Lebensweltlich orientierte Räume — LOR

Some of the data sets for the city of Berlin use so called LORs as geographic extents / areas / shapes. LORs were initially created by the city's bureau of statistics in 2006. The statistical process that created those areas by grouping building-blocks took a lot of factors into account: building structures, sociological milieus, major roads, natural barriers, population density and many more, while at the same time trying to conserve existing statistical areas.

The LORs should help urban planners and statisticians. The LORs were successively introduced since 2006, this means, that for older data the geographic areas in the data sets might not match the LORs.

The LORs are structured into four (three) layers. The first layer as we present it here are the districts (Bezirke), which are not counted as an official layer by the city. With every layer the granularity of the data is growing. This means, that while the first layer is holding 12 areas, the second layer, the so called prediction-areas (Prognoseräume) hold 60 areas, the third, the district-areas (Bezirksräume) hold 136 and the last layer, the planning areas (Planungsräume) hold 447 areas.
